@@@@@He always waved; I always waved back One
    @@@@@He always waved;
    I always waved back
One day in late January, when I had closed the
distance between us to not much more than an
eighth of a mile, a second striped chair appeared
on the sandA second glass, empty (but tall and
terribly inviting), appeared on the tableWhen I
waved, he first waved back and then pointed at the
    empty chair
    185
"Thanks, but not yet!" I called
"Hell, come on down!" he called back"I'll give
you a ride back in the golf cart!"
I smiled at thatIlse had been all in favor of a
golf cart, so I could go racing up and down the
beach, scaring the peeps"Not in the game-plan,"
I yelled, "but I'll get there in time! Whatever's
in that pitcher - keep it on ice for me!"
"You know best, muchacho!" He sketched a little
salute"Meantime, do the day and let the day do
    you!"
I remember all sorts of things Wireman said, but I
believe that's the one I associate with him the
most strongly, maybe because I heard him say it
before I knew his name or had even shaken his hand:
Do the day and let the day do you

Walking wasn't all Freemantle was about that
winter; Freemantle started to be about living
againAnd that felt fucking greatI came to a
decision one windy night when the waves were
pounding and the shells were arguing instead of
    186
just conversing: When I knew this new way of
feeling was for real, I was going to take Reba the
Anger-Management Doll down to the beach, douse her
with charcoal lighter-fluid, and set her ablaze
Give my other life a true Viking funeralWhy the
    hell not?
In the meantime there was painting, and I took to
it like peeps and pelicans take to waterAfter a
week, I regretted having spent so much time
farting around with colored pencilsI sent Ilse
an e-mail thanking her for bullying me, and she
sent me one back, telling me she hardly needed
encouragement in that departmentShe also told me
that The Hummingbirds had played a big church in
Pawtucket, Rhode Island - sort of a tour warm-up -
and the congregation had gone wild, clapping and
shouting out hallelujahs"There was a good deal
of swaying in the aisles," she wrote"It's the
    Baptist substitute for dancing
That winter I also made the Internet in general
and Google in particular my close personal friends,
pecking away one-handedWhen it came to Duma Key,
I found little more than a mapI could have dug
deeper and harder, but something told me to leave
    187
that alone for the time beingWhat I was really
interested in were peculiar events following the
loss of limbs, and I found a mother-lode
I should tell you that while I took all the
stories Google led me to with a grain of salt, I
didn't reject even the wildest completely, because
I never doubted that my own strange experiences
were related to the injuries I'd suffered - the

    "But Scarlett-"
"But me no buts, Miss EleanorJust hand me the
biscuits What am I doing? Scarlett thought, near
    panic
I should never have dashed off this way, Rhett's going to be furious
    with me
And I must look awfulIt's bad enough just to show up where I don't
belong; at least I could look prettyI had it all planned so
differentShe had thought about it a thousand times, what it would
    be
like when next she saw RhettSometimes she imagined that he'd
    come
home to the house late; she'd be in her nightdress, the one with the
drawstring neck-tied loose and she'd be brushing her hair before
    bedtimeRhett had always loved her hair, he said it was a live thing;
sometimes in the early days-he'd brush it for her, to see the blue
cracklings of electricityOften she pictured herself at the tea
table, dropping a piece of sugar into a cup with the silver tongs
elegantly held in her fingersShe'd be chatting cozily with Sally
Brewton, and he'd see how much at home she was, how welcomed by
Charleston's most interesting peopleHe'd catch up her hand and kiss

with hampers of cakes and champagne in a lovely green-painted boat,
resting against piles of silk cushions, holding bright flowered

one thingHe said you might as well live in a cave if you were going
to eat sitting on the ground like an animal instead of in a chair at a
table like a civilized human beingCertainly she had never thought of
the possibility that she'd show up like this, squashed amid boxes and
barrels of God knows what on a scabby boat that smelled to high

Now that she was away from the city, she was more worried about
    Rhett's
anger than about the prowling YankeeSuppose he just tells the

    @@@@@Failed Marie and his
children! He spun off the concrete, the weapon in his handHe would kill, kill!
That was the way of Jason Bourne
Then the incredible happenedA siren? The police? The brown limousine shot
forward, skirting the flaming wreck of the Jackal’s van and disappeared into the dark streets as a
patrol car raced out of the opposing darkness, its siren screaming, the tires screeching as it skidded
to a stop only yards from the flames of the demolished vehicleNothing made sense! thought Jason
Where before there had been five patrol cars, only one had returnedWhy? And even that question
was superfluousCarlos had mounted a strategy employing not one but seven, conceivably eight,
decoys, all expendable, all led to their terrible death by the consummate self-protectorThe Jackal
had sprung himself from the trap that had been reversed by his hated quarry, Delta, the product of
Medusa, a creation of American intelligenceOnce again, the assassin had outthought him, but he
had not killed himThere would be another day, another night
“Bernardine!” screamed the Deuxième official who less than thirty minutes ago had officially
disowned his colleagueLeaping out of the patrol car, the man shouted again“Bernardine! Where
are you? My God, where are you? I came back, old friend, for I could not leave you! My God,
you were right, I see that now for myself! Oh, Christ, tell me you’re alive! Answer me!”
“Another is dead,” came the reply from Bernardine as his gaunt figure walked slowly, with
difficulty, out of the storefront two hundred feet north of Bourne“I tried to tell you but you would
    not listen—”
“I was perhaps too hasty!” roared the official, running to the old man and embracing him as the
others in the patrol car, their arms crossed in front of their faces, surrounded the burning van but at
a considerable distance“I’ve radioed for our people to return!” added the official“You must
believe me, old friend, I came back because I couldn’t leave you in anger, not my old comradeI
had no idea that pig from the newspaper actually assaulted you, struck youHe told me and I threw
him out! I came back for you, you see that, don’t you? But, my God, I never expected anything
    like this!”
“It’s horrible,” said the Deuxième veteran, while cautiously, his eyes straying rapidly up and
down the boulevard, he surveyed the areaHe specifically noted the many frightened, intense faces
in the windows of the three stone buildingsThe scenario had blown apart with the van’s explosion
and the disappearance of the brown limousineThe minions were without their leader and filled

"If that's what it is," I said, and led the way
upstairs, limping on my crutchHalfway up,
    something struck me and I stopped"Wireman," I

said, without looking back, "how did you know my

For a moment he said nothingThen: "It's the only

    iii
My work was leaning against the north wall of
Little Pink, with the afternoon sun giving the
paintings plenty of natural lightLooking at them
from behind Wireman as he walked slowly down the
line, sometimes pausing and once even backtracking
to study a couple of canvases a second time, I
thought it was far more light than they deserved
Ilse and Jack had praised them, but one was my
daughter and the other my hired man
When he reached the colored pencil drawing of the
tanker at the very end of the line, Wireman
squatted and stared at it for maybe thirty seconds
    296
with his forearms resting on his thighs and his
hands hanging limply between his legs
"Shhh," he said, and I endured another thirty
seconds of silenceWhen he turned to face me, his eyes looked
very large, and the left one was inflamedWater -
not a tear - was running from the inner cornerHe
pulled a handkerchief from the back pocket of his
jeans and wiped it away, the automatic gesture of
a man who does the same thing a dozen or more
    times a day
"Holy God," he said, and walked toward the window,
stuffing the handkerchief back into his pocket
"Holy God what?" I asked"Holy God what?"
He stood looking out"You don't know how good
these are, do you? I mean you really don't
"Are they?" I askedI had never felt so unsure of
    myself"Are you serious?"
"Did you put them in chronological order?" he
asked, still looking out at the GulfThe joking,
joshing, wisecracking Wireman had taken a hikeI
had an idea the one I was listening to now had a
lot more in common with the one juries had heard

@@@@@Even the smallest rocks were too great to step overThey lifted their legs with their arms, and placed their feet on the step before them, tottered like old men out of their beds for an hour
Every minute or two someone would stop and lie huddled on the rocks, weeping with the rapt taut sobs of fatigue that sound so much like griefIn empathy a swirl of vertigo would pass from one to the other and they would listen with a morbid absorption to the racking sounds of dry nauseaOne or another of them was always retchingWhen they moved they were always fallingThe climb up the rocks slippery with mud and vegetation, the vicious thorns of bamboo thicket, the blundering of their feet against the jungle vines, all blended into one vast tormentThe men groaned and cursed, stumbled on their faces, reeled and skidded from rock to rock
It was impossible to see more than ten feet ahead, and they forgot about CroftThey had discovered that they could not hate him and do anything about it, so they hated the mountain, hated it with more fervor that they could ever have hated a human beingThe stairway became alive, personalized; it seemed to mock and deceive them at every step, resist them with every malign rockOnce more they forgot about the Japanese, forgot about the patrol, almost forgot about themselvesThe only ecstasy they could imagine would be to stop climbing
Even Croft was exhaustedHe had the task of leading them, of cutting trail whenever the foliage became too thick, and he prostrated himself trying to pull them up the mountainHe felt not only the weight of his own body but the weight of all their bodies as effectively as if he had been pulling them in harnessThey dragged him back, tugged at his shoulders and his heelsWith all his physical exertion his mind fatigued him as greatly, for he was under the acute strain of gauging their limits
There was another strainThe closer he came to the crest of the mountain the greater became his anxietyEach new turn of the staircase demanded an excessive effort of will from himHe had been driving nearer and nearer to the heart of this country for days, and it had a cumulative terrorAll the vast alien stretches of land they had crossed had eroded his will, pitched him a little finerIt was an effort, almost palpable, to keep advancing over strange hills and up the flanks of an ancient resisting mountainFor the first time in his life he started with fear every time an insect whipped into his face or an unnoticed leaf tickled his n
